The Azerbaijan Railways Closed Joint-Stock Company has started reconstruction of the Guzdak-Garadagh railway line, the company told Trend.

"The new railway will allow trains heading from north to south and back to bypass the territory of the Absheron Peninsula, and thereby simplifying cargo transportation in these directions. The length of the bypass road will be 36 kilometers, and a total of 80 kilometers of tracks will be laid along with the branches," the company said.

“The former Guzdak-Garadagh railway was single-track, which made it impossible for trains to move simultaneously in two directions. The railway, which had been in operation since 1963, later became unusable and was abandoned years. According to the new project, the line will be replaced and a double-track railway is being built in its place,” said the company.

The company noted that 63 engineering structures will be built on the new Guzdak-Garadagh railway, including 2 stations, 2 bridges, 5 pedestrian crossings, 4 car crossings, and 4 crossings for animals.

Head of the laboratory in the construction supervision department of the Azerbaijan Railways CJSC Azer Mammadov said that this railway goes through the difficult terrain, and therefore several heavy equipment is involved in the construction work.

“As for the lower track structure, we’re currently working on the construction of the subgrade and the laying of drainage elements. In connection with the upper structure of the track, now we’re preparing the ballast layer,” Mammadov said.

“Reconstruction of the Guzdak-Garadagh branch will reduce the time required for cargo and passenger traffics in this direction, and most importantly, it will allow transporting goods from north to south and back without having to enter the territory of the Absheron Peninsula. Thus, this project will expand the capabilities of the North-South International Transport Corridor and strengthen Azerbaijan's position as a transit country,” said the company.

Also, the operation of the Guzdak-Garadagh railway will reduce the congestion of the railway network on the Absheron Peninsula and will increase the intensity of passenger traffic on the Absheron ring railway, the company noted.

The company added that the launch of the new line will also contribute to the development of infrastructure and the creation of new jobs in the regions.
