Uzbekistan opens newly renovated airport

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Aug. 26

By Ilkin Seyfaddini – Trend:

Uzbekistan opened an airport in Muynak city of its Karakalpakstan Autonomous Republic, Trend reports with reference to Karakalpakstan News Agency.

On Wednesday, August 26, 2020, an Airbus A-320 aircraft with the first passengers on board flew to Muynak from Tashkent.

According to the news agency, the airport in Muynak was reconstructed and put into operation in a totally new look.

Muynak airport was built in 1947, and until the 1990s, it could accept only small aircrafts like An-24 and Yak-40, as well as other aircraft of small parameters and all types of helicopters as an airfield of the third category.

From 1960s to early 1990s, the airfield was based on An-2 aircraft, with up to 19 passenger flights per day along local air lines.

Since 1990-s it has been used as a landing site for air operations (in particular, for agrochemical measures to control locust centers in the southern Aral region).

In January 2019, the government adopted a resolution on measures for comprehensive socio-economic development of Muynak district of Karakalpakstan Autonomous Republic.

The document noted that Muynak district will be transformed into a modern city with all necessary infrastructure, including an innovative school, sports facilities, medical and preventive institutions, a modern airport, hotels, shopping and entertainment centers.
