Baku Metro switches to modern train control systems

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Nov. 30

By Sadraddin Aghjayev - Trend:

The stage-by-stage introduction of control systems for trains of the Baku Metro CJSC on the red, green, and purple lines is continuing, Spokesman for the Baku Metro Bakhtiyar Mammadov told Trend.

According to Mammadov, the stage-by-stage transition to the latest system of remote control of trains and communications, which has begun several years ago, will continue for several more years.

“Work is underway on the purple metro line. This line is undergoing a phased transition to the Communication Based Train Control (CBTC) system. This system will allow regulating the train traffic on the basis of radio channels. The red and green metro lines are in the early stages of transition to this system,” the spokesman said.

“A blockchain post was installed at the Narimanov depot, which will facilitate the organization of train traffic. The number of such blockchain control posts will soon be increased,” he said.

“The TETRA microprocessor radio communication system (provides communication between the driver and the dispatcher) is already functioning on some lines. As part of updating radio communication systems, this solution will be implemented on all lines of the Baku Metro,” Mammadov said.

The Baku Metro spokesman stressed that the introduction of these management systems is complex and that such an update will take several years.

“The car management renewal systems, our metro cars, and locomotives are also being renewed. In 2020, according to the contract signed in 2019 between the Baku Metro and the Russian Metrovagonmash wagon manufacturer, four trains (one train consists of five wagons) of new modern wagons manufactured according to the special order of the Baku metro,” he said.

“According to this contract, the supply of modern equipped wagons is envisaged for the next two years (2021-2202). Four more batches of new wagons will be delivered annually,” added Mammadov.

Currently, these cars operate on the purple metro line.
