Anaklia port remains priority for Georgia

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Dec.22

By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

The deep-water port of Anaklia remains a priority for Georgia, said Natia Turnava, the candidate for the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, Trend reports via Georgian media.

As Turnava said at the current committee hearing in the Parliament, the development of port infrastructure is of great importance for the development of the transport corridor.

"The port of Anaklia is still our priority. It is very unfortunate that this project was delayed, by 2020 we should have had an already operating port. We continue to work on this project on behalf of the government. Next year we will resume the technical-economical study on the basis of which we will start working with investors," said Turnava.

Anaklia Port Development Consortium was founded by TBC Holding and joined by American companies Conti International LLC and SSA Marine, British Wondernet Express, and Bulgarian G-Star Ltd. However, in August 2019, Conti International LLC announced its intention to leave the consortium, and ADC was left without the main investor.

The construction of the new port began in December 2017; in July 2018, the work commenced on deepening the bottom to 16 meters. However, at this stage, the work was suspended.
