Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

Some 21 million lari ($6.1 million) were spent on the modernization of Georgian Railways in 2020, Trend reports via Georgian media.

As reported, by the end of 2020, 93 percent of the railway modernization work had already been completed, however, the date of the full completion of the project was postponed by 2 years, and the completion of its modernization was postponed until 2022.

The project is fully funded by the Georgian Railway. After modernization, rail transport should be simplified and the throughput should increase from 25 million tons to 48 million tons (with the possibility of increasing to 100 million tons in the future).

The EU is also helping in the modernization of the Georgian Railways, which has allocated a grant of 1.3 million euros for the implementation of European railway standards. In 2021, the Georgian Railways will purchase 100 new wagons.

Georgian Railways will actively start renewing its carriage and locomotive fleet, which includes 3 electric locomotives and 6 modernized diesel locomotives.
