Azerbaijan reveals 1Q2021 cargo, passenger transportation data

Around 46.7 million tons of cargo were transported in Azerbaijan from January through March 2021, which is 8 percent less compared to the same period of 2020, Trend reports citing a report of the State Statistical Committee of Azerbaijan.

As reported, 54.2 percent of all cargo was transported by road, 34.3 percent - by pipeline, 8.1 percent - by rail, 3.2 percent - by sea, and 0.2 percent - by air.

At the same time, the volume of cargo transported by the private sector declined by 10.5 percent, thereby this sector accounted for 76.1 percent of all freight traffic.

“During the reporting period, 253.2 million passengers were transported, which is 42.5 percent less compared to the same period of 2020. The main part (99.8 percent) of passengers was transported by road, and the rest (0.2 percent) - by other means of transport,” said the report.

Railway transport transported 3.8 million tons of cargo (an increase of 7.2 percent), as well as 476,200 passengers, which is 56 percent less compared to a year earlier.

“On average, the number of loaded railway cars per day was 389, unloaded - 346. The average daily load of cars in the northern direction of the railway was 18,800 tons, in the western direction – 3,200 tons, in the southern direction – 1,000 tons,” said the report.

“In the first quarter of 2021, 1,483 tons of cargo were transported by sea, which is 1.1 percent less compared to the same period of 2020. The share of oil cargo accounted for 43.1 percent of the transported cargo. The volume of cargo handled in the ports of Azerbaijan amounted to 2.32 million tons, of which 96.4 percent of the total volume was transit cargo (2.24 million tons). As of April 1, 2021, the volume of the remaining cargo in the ports amounted to 59,000 tons. The number of passengers transported by sea decreased by 34.7 percent year on year, amounting to 3,200 people,” said the committee report.

“During the reporting period, 25.3 million tons of cargo were transported by road, which is 15.3 percent less compared to the same period of 2020,” the report said.

“The volume of passenger traffic by road for the specified period amounted to 252.6 million people, a decrease of 34.9 percent in annual terms. In particular, 92.6 percent of passengers were transported by buses, 7.4 percent accounted for taxi services. Freight turnover decreased by 28.1 percent, passenger turnover - by 32.1 percent,” the report reads.

“During the reporting period, 122,300 passengers were transported by air, which is 72 percent less compared to the same period of 2020. The private sector accounted for only 1 percent of this mode of transport. Freight traffic by air for the year increased by 55.6 percent, their volume amounted to 108,300 tons,” the report said.
