BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 4

By Klavdiya Romakayeva - Trend:

Field research work on the Uzbekistan-Kyrgyzstan-China railway project will begin after the COVID-19 situation stabilizes, Trend reports with reference to the press service of Uzbek Transport Ministry.

The project for the construction of a railway line, which will connect China with the countries of Central Asia, has been discussed for almost 20 years. Several route options were considered, including from China through Kyrgyzstan to Uzbekistan, then to Turkmenistan, Iran and Turkey.

It is noted that the parties cannot agree on the track gauge, as well as on the cost of building the highway, which will pass through the high-mountain hard-to-reach areas, and its route.

The next meeting of the working group on the implementation of the railway construction project took place via video conference on May 3, 2021.

The meeting discussed the project financing model presented by the Chinese side, the coordination of routes and field research, as well as the development of a tripartite action plan for 2021.

According to the message, the coordination of the railway route and the conduct of field research work will be announced in agreement with the technical working group after the stabilization of the epidemiological situation.

During the meeting, the parties noted the need to find a consensus in resolving the issue of financing this project and, first, determining the routes of railway construction.
