Turkey ratifies agreement on international combined transport of goods with Georgia

BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 7

By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan ratified an agreement on international transport of goods for the development of trade between Turkey and Georgia, signed on July 19, 2016, Trend reports citing Turkey's Resmi Gazeti.

According to the data, the parties took this step realizing the need to develop modern rail and sea transport systems in addition to roads in order to provide alternative solutions with social, economic and environmental benefits.

An important clause of the agreement is also a permit, which allows the carrier to carry out freight transport without paying road tax / user charges as a result of using the combined freight transport system.

The carrier may carry out unaccompanied combined freight transport to / from terminals only with the permission of the shipper or the combined transport company. In the absence of such permission, this vehicle is considered unauthorized and it is not allowed to cross the state border.

The parties agreed to stimulate combined freight transport at the meetings of the Joint Committee. The first meeting of the Joint Committee will take place over the next three months.

The Joint Commission has the right, in addition to the execution and implementation of this agreement, to discuss and find possible solutions to problems in the field of combined transport.

The competent authorities of the Contracting Parties will inform each other of the measures taken in respect of violations. On the other hand, in order to avoid any problems that may arise from the implementation of various conventions in the field of passenger and freight transport, the railway operators of both countries can prepare an “agreed tariff”.

All topics related to railway incidents / accidents that may occur during border crossing by rail will be regulated by the "Agreement on border crossing by rail" based on this agreement.
