Uzbekistan offers Azerbaijan to resume direct flights (Exclusive)

BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 23

By Klavdiya Romakayeva - Trend:

Uzbekistan turned to Azerbaijan with a proposal to resume direct flights, head of the department for the development of transport corridors, logistics and transit at the Ministry of Transport of Uzbekistan Bekzod Kholmatov told Trend.

According to Kholmatov, cooperation between Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan in transport sector is developing in different directions - one of them is a bilateral intergovernmental agreement on air traffic, signed in 1996, according to which the air carrier from the Uzbek side (Uzbekistan Airways) and Azerbaijan Airlines from the Azerbaijani side carry out air transportation.

Kholmatov said the direct flights were carried out between Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan before the COVID-19 pandemic. In particular, Uzbekistan Airways operated regular flights on the Tashkent - Baku - Tashkent route three times a week, while Azerbaijan Airlines operated flights on the Baku - Tashkent - Baku route twice a week.

In 2018, Uzbekistan Airways operated 208 flights from Tashkent to Baku, in 2019 - 286 flights. It is noted that the number of flights and the volume of air traffic increased.

According to Kholmatov, due to the pandemic, direct flights from Uzbekistan to Azerbaijan have been suspended.

“Azerbaijan is considering this proposal of Uzbekistan to resume the flights,” Kholmatov said.
