By Elnur Baghishov – Trend:

The volume of essential products imported to Iran through ports increased by 15 percent during the first five months of the current Iranian year (March 21 through August 22, 2021), compared to the same period last Iranian year, said Ravanbakhsh Behzadian, director general of the department on port issues of the Iranian Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO), Trend reports citing the PMO’s website.

Behzadian noted that more than 10 million tons of essential products were imported to the country through Iranian ports.

The director general added that imported goods are released immediately because most of these products can spoil quickly. The essential products are wheat, barley, corn, soybeans, oilseeds, rice, sugar, and cooking oil.

“The capacity of grain warehouses in Iranian ports is about 6 million tons. Accordingly, goods are released from ports as quickly as possible so that no problems arise,” he said.

Behzadian stressed that problems such as non-allocation of the necessary currency for the release of products, lack of coordination between the licensing authorities for the release of products and the port, etc., lead to the storage of essential products in ports.
