BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 13. There is currently an 83-percent physical progress in the construction of the railway line from Ardabil city in the Ardabil Province to Mianeh city in the East Azerbaijan Province, an official of Iran’s Construction and Development of Transportation Infrastructures Company (CDTIC) Ali Kazemi said, Trend reports citing Iranian Ministry of Roads and Urban Development.

According to the official, the construction of the railway line began in 2005. So far, rails have been laid on 101 kilometers of the railway line.

Kazemi added that if the needed funds are provided, the railway line will be launched in the current Iranian year (March 21, 2022 through March 20, 2023).

“The 175 km long railway is being built in 11 parts. About 35 percent of the railway line passes through mountainous areas. Thus, 62 tunnels with a length of 24 km and bridges with a length of 5 km are being built on the railway line,” he said.

Kazemi noted that after the launch of the railway line, it is projected that 2.5 million tons of cargo and 600,000 passengers will be transported in the first year.

“Meanwhile, in 20 years, the railway will be able to transport 4 million tons of cargo and 1.5 million passengers a year,” the official also pointed out.

Iran considers the launch of the railway line important from the economic and transit point of view.
