BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 20. Construction work has been completed on 11 kilometers of the 35-kilometer-long Rasht-Caspian railway line in the Gilan Province (northern Iran), Deputy Director of the Construction and Development of Transportation Infrastructures Company (CDTIC), Abbas Khatibi said, Trend reports citing the company’s website.

According to Khatibi, a part of the Rasht-Caspian railway line passes through agricultural areas and wetlands. This caused certain delays in the construction of the railway.

The deputy director also added that there is an 80-percent physical progress in the construction of the infrastructure of the railway line.

“Meanwhile, in general, the physical progress in the construction of the railway is about 70 percent,” he said.

Khatibi noted that within the visit of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi to Gilan Province for the last Iranian year (March 21, 2021 through March 20, 2022), a total of 6.5 trillion rials (about $155 million) was allocated for the construction of the Rasht-Caspian railway line. So far, 2 trillion rials (about $ 47.6 million) has been provided in this regard.

“With the allocation of the remaining funds, the focus is on completing the construction of this railway line as soon as possible,” the official stressed.

The deputy director also pointed out that this railway line will greatly facilitate the establishment of a link between the Caspian Sea and the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, as well as the transportation of goods from East Asia to European countries, mainly Russia and the Caucasus, and vice versa.
