Iran looks to get second operator for its Chabahar Port as transit drops

TEHRAN, Iran, October 12. The share of India in Iran’s cargo transit via Chabahar Port is about 3 percent and the approach of the Indian operator has damaged the marketing and transit, said secretary of Shipping association of Iran Masoud Polmeh, Trend reports citing ILNA.

Selecting second operator for Shahid Beheshti Port in Chabahar would improve the business, commodity and container transport and investment, he noted.

Polmeh pointed out that the investment of the Indian operator company in Shahid Beheshti port was insignificant and did not fulfill commercial expectations, therefore it is necessary to have a second operator to raise the investment.

According to the official, volume of cargo transit and export from India to Central Asia via Iran’s Chabahar Port was not significant.

Since the state-run India Ports Global Limited (IPGL) began operations at Shahid Beheshti terminal in late 2018, it handled more than 4.8 million tons of bulk cargo, including trans-shipments from Australia, Bangladesh, Brazil, Germany, Russia and the UAE.
