Azerbaijan's freight, passenger traffic by all transport modes up for 2022

BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 19. Azerbaijan’s freight traffic by all transport modes grew in 2022, the State Statistical Committee told Trend.

According to the committee, this figure amounted to 218.7 million tons, up by 12.8 percent on annual basis.

The committee said that 57.6 percent of all cargo was transported by road, 30.2 percent – by pipeline, 8.6 percent – by rail, 3.4 percent – by sea, and 0.2 percent – by air.

Last year, cargo movement in the private sector increased by 12.5 percent compared to 2021. The mentioned sector accounted for 78.2 percent of the overall freight transport volume.

Meanwhile, passenger traffic in Azerbaijan exceeded 1.6 billion people, which was 33.5 percent more than in the previous year. Most of the passengers (86.7 percent) were transferred by road, 12.9 percent – by metro, and 0.4 percent – by other types of transport.

In 2022, rail cargo transportation made up 18.7 million tons (an increase of 24.3 percent) whereas passenger transportation totaled over 5.1 million people (growth of 81.8 percent).

Besides, according to the committee, 7.5 million tons of cargo were transported by sea, up by 37.5 percent against 2021, and the share of oil in the total freight traffic volume was 43.7 percent.

The cargo handled in the Azerbaijani ports last year exceeded 11.7 million tons, out of which 91.4 percent or over 10.7 million tons fell on transit goods. As of January 1, 2022, the amount of remaining goods reached 369,000 tons.

At the same time, 126 million tons of freight were transported by road, growing by 12 percent compared to 2021, and passenger carriage by this transport mode exceeded 1.4 billion people (an increase of 25.5 percent).

Besides, 208.7 million passengers were transported by Baku Metro (a growth of 2.3 times).

Over 2.2 million passengers were transported by air in 2022, which was two times more than in 2021.

Meantime, air freight totaled 406,200 tons, falling by 27.1 percent year on year.

In 2021, the freight traffic by all modes of transport in Azerbaijan amounted to nearly 194 million tons, which was 2.8 percent more than in 2020. A total of 58 percent of all cargo was transported by road, 31.1 percent - by pipeline, 7.8 percent - by rail, 2.8 percent - by sea, and 0.3 percent - by air.

In the mentioned year, freight transportation in the private sector rose by 2.6 percent compared to 2020, and the share of this sector in the overall volume of cargo transportation was 78.4 percent.

Passenger transport in Azerbaijan exceeded 1.2 billion people in 2021, which is 3.1 percent more than in 2020. Most of the passengers (92.2 percent) were transported by road, 7.4 percent – by metro, and 0.4 percent – by other modes of transport.

Cargo transportation by rail in 2021 amounted to 15.1 million tons (an increase of three percent on an annual basis), and passenger transportation totaled nearly 2.8 million people (an increase of 33 percent).

During the mentioned year, more than 5.4 million tons of cargo were transported by sea, which was 8.6 percent less than in 2020. The share of oil in the total volume of freight traffic was 34.7 percent.

The volume of cargo handled in the ports of Azerbaijan in 2021 exceeded 8.8 million tons, of which 94.8 percent, or about 8.4 million tons, were transit goods. As of January 1, 2022, the volume of remaining goods in the ports amounted to 231,100 tons.

Meanwhile, 112.5 million tons of cargo were transported by road, which was 0.9 percent more than in 2020, and passenger carriage by this transport mode amounted to almost 1.1 billion people (an increase of 1.8 percent).

Over 1.13 million passengers were transported by air in 2021, which was 96 percent more than in 2020, and cargo transportation by air increased by 21.3 percent, up to 556,600 tons.
