Iran and China partner to expand Imam Khomeini International Airport

BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 22. Iran is set to begin the expansion of its Imam Khomeini International Airport, a strategic project for the country, with the help of China, as of next week (November 25 through December 1), Iranian Minister of Roads and Urban Development Mehrdad Bazrpash said, Trend reports.

He spoke to the reporters after the meeting of the Cabinet of Iran in Tehran on November 22, 2023.

Bazrpash said that the project will cost more than $2 billion and will be carried out under a contract signed during the visit of Iran’s 1st Vice President, Mohammad Mokhber, to China on November 5.

He stated that Iran and China have had extensive negotiations for the expansion of the airport in Tehran Province (northern Iran).

He added that expanding the airport will allow Iran to become a regional hub for airports, which is one of the country's primary goals.

The Imam Khomeini International Airport can currently handle 6.5 million passengers and 120,000 tons of cargo annually.
