BAKU, Azerbaijan, February 22. The volume of cargo transiting through Iran rose by 35 percent in the first 11 months of the current Iranian year (March 21, 2023 through February 19, 2024), compared to the same period last year, said Mohammad Rezvanifar, director general of the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA), Trend reports.
Rezvanifar noted that Iran transited 16.1 million tons of cargo in 11 months, with the highest amount of cargo passing through the customs at Shahid Rajaee port.
He said that this year, customs handled 4.75 million tons of products, which was 9 percent higher than the previous year.
The director general also listed the other customs that had the most transit through Iran in 11 months. They were:
- Parvizkhan customs - 3.49 million tons
- Bashmaq customs - 1.72 million tons
- Bazargan customs - 1.1 million tons
- Sarakhs customs - 659,000 tons
- Bilasuvar customs - 632,000 tons
- Jolfa customs - 505,000 tons
- Astara customs - 502,000 tons
- Bandar Lengeh port customs – 457,000 tons
- Astara Port Special Economic Zone Customs - 407,000 tons
Rezvanifar added that these customs accounted for 88.3 percent of the total transit through Iran in 11 months.
Despite being on several international transit routes, such as the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) and the East-West Corridor, Iran lacks adequate infrastructure for them. This makes Iran an unreliable route for international cargo companies. Moreover, Iran faces many international sanctions. Thus, international companies avoid cargo transit through Iran.
