BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 5. A high-level event on “International Aviation and Climate Change” will be held during the Urbanization, Tourism and Transport Day in Baku on November 20 as part of COP29, Trend reports.
According to the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport of Azerbaijan, the event will feature a lively discussion aimed at cutting down the environmental footprint of aviation and hitting the bullseye on global climate goals.
This event, jointly organized by the Azerbaijani Ministry of Digital Development, Ministry of Energy of Saudi Arabia, and International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), will bring together ministers, government officials, industry leaders, and key stakeholders to engage in meaningful dialogue on the most recent advancements in the decarbonization of international aviation.
The Ministry of Digital Development stressed that the aviation sector is classified as a hard-to-abate industry, with no dependable alternatives to liquid fuels in the immediate term.
"Thus, there is a need for urgent global action to accelerate the global scale up in development and deployment of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), low-carbon aviation fuels (LCAF), and other cleaner energy sources in order to achieve the long-term global aspirational goal for international aviation (LTAG). The event is aligned with ICAO long-term global aspirational goal of achieving Net-Zero Carbon Emissions by 2050 for international aviation," the ministry added.
In just less than a week’s time, the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) will be kicking off in Azerbaijan, the decision of which was made at the plenary meeting of COP28 held in Dubai in December last year.
The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference in the climate system. The abbreviation COP (Conference of Parties) means “Conference of Parties” and is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.
A total of 198 countries are parties to the Convention. Unless otherwise decided by the parties, COP is held annually. The first COP event was held in March 1995 in Germany's Berlin with its secretariat in Bonn.
