Another 19 people detained in Zhanaozen

On Monday, law enforcement authorities detained 19 more people agitating Zhanaozen population to hold rally and stay off job, Kazakh Interior Minister Kalmukhanbet Kasimov at the government meeting, Kazinform reported.

"Some 19 people were detained yesterday, who tried to organize a rally and threatened those who intended to work agitating them for holding rallies," Kasimov said.

Kasimov said that the detainees, according to law enforcement agencies, were involved in committing crimes in Zhanaozen.

According to Kasimov, in total during the riots in Mangistau region 15 people were killed, 14 of them in Zhanaozen and one - in the Shetpe settlement, 110 people were injured, 73 of them are undergoing out-patient treatment. Some 41 people are brought to administrative responsibility.

"In general, the situation normalized, patrolling is underway, everyday life is getting better. street lighting and telephone is restored, and streets cleaning is underway. We see that the population goes to work," Kasimov said.

On Friday mass riots took place in the Kazakh oil town of Zhanaozen in the Mangistau region which killed 14 and injured about 90 people. President Nursultan Nazarbayev signed a decree to impose a state of emergency in the area from Saturday. According to the Prosecutor General's Office, situation in the Zhanaozen city is gradually stabilizing.

On Dec.17 a group of people blocked the movement of the Mangyshlak-Aktobe passenger train at Shetpe railway station in the Mangistau region. According to spokesman for the prosecutor general's office Nurdaulet Suindikov, the group that blocked the train chanted slogans supporting the rioters in Zhanaozen. As a result there was an hour long delay to several passenger and nine freight trains, 11 people were injured, while one died.
