New head appointed for Kazakh Zhanaozen

A new akim (head) appointed to Kazakh city of Zhanaozen, where mass riots took place in December, spokesman of Mangistau region akimat (regional governing body) where Zhanaozen is located Nurbol Telegenov told Novosti-Kazakhstan.

"Serikbai Truman was appointed to the post of Zhanaozen head," Telegenov said.

Earlier Truman was head of one of Mangistau region's districts and Deputy Governor of the region.

Mass riots hit the Kazakh oil city of Zhanaozen in Mangystau region on Dec.16. According to the Kazakh General Attorney Office, 14 people were killed as a result and 64 injured by fire. Buildings and cars were burned and the property of individuals and institutions destroyed. A state of emergency was imposed in Zhanaozen from Dec.17 to Jan 30. The riots were preceded by many month of oil companies employees striking over dissatisfaction with their wages.

Former Zhanaozen's head Orak Sarbopeyev was earlier detained on suspicion of defrauding of public funds.
