The implementation of a comprehensive development plan for the city of Zhanaozen until 2020 which began four years ago is continuing, akim (governor) of Kazakhstan's Mangistau oblast, Alik Aidarbayev said in Astana on Nov. 15.

"Nearly 12 billion tenge ($1 is equal to 153.08 tenge) were actually allocated for the development of the city of Zhanaozen in 2013 as part of a comprehensive plan of development until 2020 and for a plan of development of mono-towns. This allows the building of hospitals, schools, kindergartens, roads and solving issues of housing and communal services," Aidarbayev said.

He recalled that Zhanaozen is a mono-town, the entire economy of which is dependent on the activity of single urban forming enterprise -Ozenmunaigas JSC.

"At one time Zhanaozen was created as a field camp. Some 16 million tons of oil were produced in this city which had a population of 60,000. Today, its population is over 120,000 and five million tons of oil is produced here," the akim of the oblast said.

"The city is growing not only due to the arrival of our fellow citizens, as it is commonly believed, but also because of a natural growth of more than 3000 children born here every year. This is the highest indicator in the region," he said.

According to Aidarbayev, today the city's situation is stable.
