BAKU, Azerbaijan, Apr. 9

By Nargiz Sadikhova - Trend:

OneWeb telecommunications company headquartered in London is planning to implement over eight launches of satellites from Kazakhstan’s Baikonur Cosmodrome, Trend reports citing the press office of the government.

The topic was discussed during the meeting between the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Askar Mamin and Chairman of the Board of OneWeb Sunil Bharti Mittal.

During the meeting, Mittal talked about the progress of the launch of satellites from the Baikonur Cosmodrome as part of the deployed OneWeb‘s global satellite network. To date, 110 satellites have been launched into space and eight more are yet to be launched.

The global satellite network will consist of 648 satellites in 18 orbital planes at an altitude of 1,200 kilometers. The full commissioning of the satellite network and coverage of Kazakhstan’s territory is expected at the end of 2021.

The parties also talked about the prospects for the implementation of the project on the widespread coverage of Kazakhstan, including remote and hard-to-reach areas, with high-speed broadband Internet via communication satellites.

The progress of the project on assembling spares for OneWeb satellites at the Assembly and Test Complex of Spacecraft in Nur-Sultan, as well as the issue of creating a joint venture to locate a gateway station in Kazakhstan for the subsequent exclusive distribution of OneWeb satellite Internet to Central Asian countries was discussed during the meeting.

OneWeb is a global communications network powered by a constellation of 650 Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites. Headquartered in London, OneWeb is enabling high-speed, low latency connectivity for governments, businesses, and communities everywhere around the world.
