A decision has been made in Kazakhstan to ban the export of certain wood materials in accordance with order No. 611 dated November 23, 2021, of Beybut Atamkulov, minister of industry and infrastructural development, for a period of six months, Trend reports citing the ministry.
The ban applying to the wood materials with 4401, 4403, 4404, 4406 and 4407 codes of the commodity nomenclature of the Eurasian Economic Union’s Foreign Economic Activity [which include fuelwood in the form of logs, cooper wood; split logs; piles, stakes and pillars of wood, chips, wooden sleepers for railway or tram tracks] was introduced for a period of six months and will be further prolonged to support domestic woodworking enterprises, fill the domestic market with raw materials and preserve the forest fund of Kazakhstan.
The territory of Kazakhstan is sparsely wooded (11 percent of the country's territory, that is, 13.3 million hectares are covered with forests). Russia is the main supplier of raw wood to Kazakhstan.
By the order, it was also prohibited to export Russian-made unprocessed (round) timber from Kazakhstan.
When the order was adopted, all the rules for the adoption of regulatory legal acts were observed. So, the draft order was submitted for consideration to the Interdepartmental Commission on Foreign Trade Policy and Participation in International Economic Organizations then sent for approval to interested bodies and organizations, agreed with accredited organizations, published on the open portal of the normative legal act, as well as received a positive opinion from the public council.
