BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 1. Some 12 textile and garment projects aimed at boosting the industrial potential of Kazakhstan’s Turkestan region are expected to be commissioned soon, Trend reports, citing the Ministry of Trade and Integration of Kazakhstan.

The projects will increase the volume of deep processing of cotton fiber from 17,000 to 66,000 tons per annum. Currently, only two enterprises have the capacity for deep processing of the cotton fiber, which means that around 85 percent of raw material is being underutilized.

Serik Zhumangarin, the Minister of Trade and Integration of Kazakhstan, said that the commissioning of these projects will enable the region to utilize the existing resource base.

“Kazakh government will support the development of the light industry. It is important to develop this sector and enter global markets,” the Minister added.

The Turkestan region of Kazakhstan is the sole cotton-growing region of the country. The annual cotton output of the region amounts to 300 tons of cotton. Currently, some 22 cotton processing plants are functioning in the region.

Kazakhstan is systematically modernizing industrial enterprises and infrastructure to diversify the economy and utilize the unexplored potential of this sector of the economy. The light and textile industry is considered to be a crucial element of the national economy due to the large number of people being employed by the enterprises in this sector.
