EBRD keen to help Kazakhstan become carbon neutral

ASTANA, Kazakhstan, September 7. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is ready to take part in achieving carbon neutrality in Kazakhstan, Trend reports.

This was stated during the meeting of the Minister of National Economy of Kazakhstan, Kuantirov Alibek, with representatives of the EBRD in Astana.

The parties discussed the implementation of the strategy for achieving carbon neutrality in the Republic of Kazakhstan until 2060 and further steps to decarbonize the economy.

Kuantirov noted that the implementation of the strategy should be carried out taking into account the new tariff policy, climatic conditions, and the attraction of new technologies, including improving the efficiency of the use of coal resources.

During the meeting, the need to develop a unique energy transition model for Kazakhstan, taking country specifics into account, was noted.

Representatives of the EBRD pointed out the importance of the measures taken by Kazakhstan as part of the transition to low-carbon development. EBRD also expressed its readiness to provide expert support in the development of an action plan together with line ministries.

Following the meeting, the parties agreed to intensify work in all important areas.

As evident from the latest facts sheet, only in 2022 did the EBRD invest some 480 million euros in 14 projects in Kazakhstan. Overall, the EBRD's cumulative investments in the country during the years of its operations in the country totaled over 9.7 billion euros in 310 projects.
