ASTANA, Kazakhstan, September 15. About 141,300 SMEs were registered in the Shymkent city of Kazakhstan, and just over 91 percent are active, employing a total of about 213,700 people as of August 1, 2023, Trend reports.
Data from the Kazakhstan Institute of Economic Research shows that, indicators for the number of SMEs are inferior to four administrative units, and in terms of the number of employees, they are inferior to five administrative units.
The contribution of business in the city of Shymkent to the economy is also not very high; the city ranks seventh among the regions of the country. As of January 1, 2023, the share of SMEs in GDP was 1.3 percent, which is inferior to Almaty (by 9.4 percentage points), Astana (by 5.8 p.p.), and Atyrau region. (by 1.8 p.p.), Almaty region. (by 0.4 p.p.), West Kazakhstan region and Karaganda region. (by 0.1 p.p.).
Labor productivity per employee is also at an average level. At the end of the first quarter of 2023, 1 person employed in SMEs produced products worth 2.4 million tenge (about $5,127).
In total, business entities during this period produced products worth 517.8 billion tenge (about $1.1 billion), of which medium-sized businesses produced products worth 97 billion tenge (about $208.9 million) or 18.7 percent, small businesses produced products worth 420.8 billion tenge (about $898.9 million) or 81.3 percent.
