Kazakhstan Railways plans to boost freight turnover

ASTANA, Kazakhstan, November 21. Kazakhstan Railways (KTZ, a national company) plans to increase freight turnover to 274 billion t-km by the end of 2023, Chairman of the Board of KTZ Nurlan Sauranbayev said at a government meeting, Trend reports.

Freight turnover from January through October 2023 increased by 7.2 percent and amounted to 224.2 billion t-km.

The main growth was achieved through exports and transit transportation. For example, compared to last year, grain exports increased by 32 percent. Transportation of iron ore and chemicals has increased by the same amount.

In addition, Sauranbayev noted that, starting in 2020, the company has consistently had positive financial results. For 10 months of 2023, a net profit of 139 billion tenge (about $301 million) was received.

KTZ's income for 2023 is expected to be around 2 trillion tenge (approximately $4.33 billion).

Furthermore, loading on the Kazakhstan Railways network (KTZ, national corporation) totaled 213.8 million tons from January to October 2023, 2.1 tons more than the previous year.

Over 138 million tons were transported by rail throughout the republic. Exports increased by 7.1 percent to 75.7 million tons.

During the reporting period, over 87.3 million tons of coal were loaded. Including within the republic, 61.2 million tons.
