ASTANA, Kazakhstan, February 23. A large hydroelectric power station Orta Kakpak with a rated capacity of 2.2 MW was put into operation in the Raiymbek district of the Almaty region of Kazakhstan, Trend reports.

According to the regional executive power, the total cost of the project, construction of which began in 2021, is 1.5 billion tenge (about $3.3 million).

To note, the Orta Kakpak hydroelectric power station produces 13 million kW of electricity per year. The length of the water pipeline is 4 kilometers. A 10-kilovolt line with a length of 12 kilometers has been laid to the Kainar substation. The produced energy source is delivered to the distribution company and then transferred to consumers.

As the regional executive power pointed out, during the implementation of the project, 45 people were provided with work. In addition, 4 local residents were provided with permanent jobs at this modern hydroelectric power station with automatic control.

Moreover, the construction of the hydroelectric power station was financed within the framework of the state program Business Road Map.

Meanwhile, Kazakhstan plans to introduce major renewable energy projects in the coming years. Electric energy generation in Kazakhstan is carried out by 222 power plants, of which 146 are renewable energy facilities with a total capacity of 2.8 GW. Renewable energy has shown steady growth and since 2014 its installed capacity has increased more than 16 times (from 178 MW in 2014 to 2,868 MW in 2023).

At the end of 2023, the volume of electricity generated by renewable energy facilities amounted to 6.675 billion kWh or 5.92 percent of the total volume of electrical energy production, while taking into account large hydroelectric power plants it amounted to 13.7 percent.
