ASTANA, Kazakhstan, April 17. The Ministries of Energy of Kazakhstan and Russia have signed a cooperation agreement on projects for the construction of coal-fired thermal power plants (TPPs) in the cities of Kokshetau, Semey, and Ust-Kamenogorsk, Trend reports.

According to the agreement, the parties have identified authorized organizations represented by INTER RAO – Export LLC and Samruk-Energo JSC.

"The construction of three new thermal power plants in three regional centers - Semey, Kokshetau, and Ust-Kamenogorsk - taking into account the extensive reserves of thermal coal will provide a powerful impetus to their further development," said the Minister of Energy of Kazakhstan, Almassadam Satkaliyev.

The authorized organization from the Kazakhstan side, represented by Samruk-Energy JSC, has already formed the appropriate roadmap for the start of the implementation of the first TPP project this year.

As a source at Inter RAO-Export previously told Trend, the total capacity of the Kokshetau TPP, Semey TPP, and Ust-Kamenogorsk TPP will be 1 GW.

On November 13, the energy ministers of Kazakhstan and Russia, Almassadam Satkaliyev and Nikolay Shulginov, signed a memorandum of cooperation on projects for the construction of three thermal power plants in Kazakhstan.

It is proposed to construct a 240-MW thermal power plant in Kokshetau by 2027. It is also proposed to construct a 360-MW thermal power plant near Semey. The development of a thermal power plant in Ust-Kamenogorsk is scheduled until 2035; however, its capacity is still uncertain.
