ASTANA, Kazakhstan, May 31. Kazakhstan will consider the feasibility of building a bridge across the Caspian Sea in the direction of Baku, the concept of development of transport and logistics potential of the Republic of Kazakhstan until 2030 said, Trend reports.
“A comprehensive assessment of the feasibility of building a railroad and highway bridge across the Caspian Sea in the direction of Aktau-Alat (Azerbaijan) will be carried out,” the document says.
To note, the straight line distance across the Caspian Sea between the port of Aktau and the port of Alat is about 400 kilometers.
At present, cargo transportation between Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan is carried out by ferries across the Caspian Sea. This route is also part of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR, or Middle Corridor).
The Trans-Caspian International Transport Route transported 2.8 million tons of cargo in 2023, which is 1.9 times more than in 2022.
Additionally, it should be noted that, according to the concept, Kazakhstan intends to become a leading regional transit hub by 2030. To achieve this goal, several measures and projects are planned within six years.
Thus, to attract additional transit volumes and ensure uninterrupted multimodal transportation, work will be done within the framework of the development of cross-border hubs and terminal networks.
Meanwhile, the capacity of international transit-transport corridors, logistics terminals, and checkpoints will be increased.
Kazakhstan also intends to modernize and increase the number of transport vehicles, including cargo road, rail, sea, and air transport; eliminate non-physical barriers in international transport communication; and simplify customs administration of the process of multimodal transportation of goods in international traffic.
Furthermore, Kazakhstan plans to improve national legislation and conclude new interstate agreements in the fields of transport, transit trade, etc.
