Kazakhstan to roll out multi-billion-dollar investment projects in energy sector

ASTANA, Kazakhstan, June 6. The Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan has formed 60 projects totaling 17 trillion tenge (about $38 billion) as part of the Nationwide Pool of Investment Projects, Trend reports.

According to the Ministry, the main areas of investment projects are the commissioning of new energy capacities, the construction of gas processing plants, the expansion of domestic refineries, projects in the field of renewable energy sources, the development of petrochemicals, etc.

Commissioning of new energy capacities:

According to the plans, gas generation projects with an installed capacity of about 2.3 GW are being implemented in the southern regions;

In 2024, it is planned to complete a large-scale project to restore the first power unit at Ekibastuz GRES-1 with a capacity of 500 MW;

Work will continue on the project to connect the electrical networks of Western Kazakhstan to the Unified Electric Power System;

According to the adopted Energy Balance of the country, until 2035, it is envisaged to implement a number of projects to modernize existing ones as well as commission new capacities with a total capacity of about 26 GW.

Construction of gas processing plants:

Gas processing plant at the Karachaganak field with a capacity of 4 billion cubic meters per year; commissioning is scheduled for 2028;

By 2030, it is planned to commission a new gas processing plant with a capacity of 2.5 billion cubic meters at the Kashagan field;

Construction of a gas processing plant with a capacity of 1 billion cubic meters is underway at the Kashagan field, with a commissioning date in the second quarter of 2026.

Expansion of local oil refineries:

Work is underway to increase oil refining capacity from 18 to 27 million tons. In particular, the Shymkent Oil Refinery - from 6 to 12 million tons; the Pavlodar Petrochemical Plant - from 5.5 to 8 million tons; and CaspiBitum - from 1 to 1.5 million tons.

Renewable energy sources:

By the end of 2027, it is planned to commission 592 MW of green generation.

Petrochemicals:

In the field of petrochemicals, three large projects are being implemented for the production of butadiene and its derivatives with a capacity of up to 339,000 tons per year, polyethylene with a capacity of 1.25 million tons per year, and polyethylene terephthalate with a capacity of up to 730,000 tons per year, for a total of about $12.9 billion.
