Kyrgyzstan must stop reckless disregard to emergency response - Roza Otunbayeva

"We must cease the practice of reckless disregard to emergencies response in Kyrgyzstan," President of Kyrgyzstan Roza Otunbayeva said today at a meeting of the Inter Department Commission for Prevention and Elimination of Emergency Situations, news agency "24.kg" reported.

According to her, earlier the heads of regional districts disregarded such problems on prevention of emergency situations. "This is despite the fact that Kyrgyzhydromet (hydro meteorological station) warns local authorities and local administrations about avalanche threat in advance. Nevertheless, they do not respond adequately providing enough food supplies. As a result the Ministry of Emergency Situations urgently had to deliver aid to local residents by air transport, spending vast sums of budget's money," said Ms. Otunbayeva.

She noted that the snow packs that hit roads of strategic importance implies a lot of problems. "It creates big traffic jams and widespread discontent among drivers and citizens. For example, last winter an avalanche hit Kara-Kuldzha district and blocked a road to several locations for more than a month. We should not continue this practice any more.
