Acting Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan Almazbek Atambaev has won the presidential election with more than 50% of the votes of citizens who came to the polls, after 79.77% of ballots were counted, according to the data on the Central Election Committee's website.
According to the constitutional law on elections to defeat the candidate must garner more than 50% of voters who came to the poling stations.
915.068 thousands voters - more than half of 1.827 million who participated in the election - have voted for Atambayev, RIA Novosti reported.
Ex-Minister of Emergency Situations, "Ata-Zhurt" party leader Kamchibek Tashiev is second with 215.626 thousands votes followed by former Kyrgyz Secretary of State, the leader of the "United Kyrgyzstan" party Adakhan Madumarov with 209.677 thousands.
Total of 16 candidates participated in the election.
According to the website of the Kyrgyzstan CEC, voter turnout in presidential elections has exceeded 60%.
The polling stations opened at 8:00 am and closed at 7:00 pm. According to the new Constitution the President of Kyrgyzstan is elected for six years and only one presidential term.
2289 polling stations were set up in the country as well as 29 polling stations in 23 countries worldwide.
Over 3 million voters are registered in the country to date.
792 international observers from 56 countries are monitoring the elections.
