BAKU, Azerbaijan, February 8. Kyrgyz Kumtor Gold Company produced 17.3 tons of gold in 2022, which is an increase from 14.5 tons of 2021, Head of the company, Almaz Baryktabasov, said during a meeting with Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov, Trend reports via Kyrgyz media.
He added that last year, the company transferred 32.1 billion soms ($369.9 million) of taxes and mandatory payments, exceeding the plan by 6.6 percent.
In May 2022, the then-Head of the national holding "Great Nomads Heritage", Tengiz Bolturuk, announced that Kumtor planned to produce 17.5 million of gold in 2022.
In 2021, the government of Kyrgyzstan took over the management of the Kumtor mine from Centerra Gold Inc. Following the agreement, signed in April 2021, Kyrgyzstan transferred 24 percent of its share to Centerra Gold Inc. and refused all economic and ecological claims, and 100 percent of the Kumtor Gold Company was transferred to Kyrgyzstan.
Kumtor is the largest gold deposit in Kyrgyzstan, producing 15–17 tons of gold per year. Located in the east of the country, the company operates from 1997. Today, Kumtor ranked third among exports of goods from Kyrgyzstan. The company employs about 4,000 people.
According to the National Statistical Committee of Kyrgyzstan, the largest buyer of Kyrgyz gold from January through November 2022 was Türkiye. The total value of Kyrgyz gold imported to Türkiye reached $789,700.
