BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan, July 28. The government of Kyrgyzstan has granted permission to set up a mining farm with a capacity of up to 30 MW within the Kambarata-2 Hydro Power Plant (HPP), President Sadyr Japarov said, Trend reports.
The construction of the mining farm is expected to require approximately $20 million in investment, which will be provided by an investor.
According to the president, the Kambarata HPP-2 has a total electricity generation capacity of 120 MW, but only 90 MW can be utilized due to the limitation of line capacity set at 90 MW.
He expressed displeasure with the fact that over the course of 13 years of operation, the hydropower plant lost around 6.8 billion kWh of electrical energy, equivalent to 3.2 billion soms ($36.5 million).
Japarov emphasized that once the mining farm becomes operational, such losses will be avoided. The earnings generated from the mining activities will benefit the energy sector and the public. Each unit of energy produced will be under the supervision and utilization of the energy authorities.
According to the State Statistical Committee of Kyrgyzstan, a total of 6.486 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity was generated in the country from January through May 2023,which is 17.3 percent more than in the same period of 2022.
