Kyrgyzstan sees rise in electricity generation

BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan, August 23. Kyrgyzstan generated 8.7 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity from January through July 2023, Trend reports.

According to data provided by the State Statistical Committee of the country, this figure is 10.4 percent higher than the electricity generated in the corresponding months of 2022 (7.9 billion kilowatt-hours).

In July 2023, the power stations of Kyrgyzstan produced 1.1 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, which is 7 percent less than the output in July of the previous year (1.2 billion kilowatt-hours).

Meanwhile, Kyrgyzstan imported 2.1 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity from January through June 2023, which is an increase of 32.3 percent compared to the first half of 2022 (1.5 billion kilowatt-hours).

The value of these imports totaled $57.052 million, increasing 54.9 percent compared to the same period in 2022 ($36.829 million).

On July 24, 2023, Kyrgyzstan declared a state of emergency in the energy sector to address challenges related to climate change, low water inflow in the Naryn river basin, and a shortage of generating capacity amid rapidly increasing energy consumption.
