BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan, March 4. The power capacity of electricity stations in Kyrgyzstan could decrease by 290 MW due to impending reconstruction works on power plants in preparation for the upcoming autumn-winter season of 2024-2025, Deputy Minister of Energy of Kyrgyzstan Taalaibek Baigaziev told local media during the press conference, Trend reports.

"With the commencement of the autumn-winter season expected earlier than last year, preparations are underway to reinforce our energy systems," he remarked.

The refurbishment plan includes the rehabilitation of hydro unit No. 1 at the Toktogul hydroelectric power plant (HPP), set to commence on March 5, 2024. Baigaziev outlined that upon completion, the power capacity is expected to increase by 60 MW, bringing the total capacity of the Toktogul HPP to 1380 MW.

Additionally, plans are in motion to initiate the reconstruction of hydro unit No. 4 at the Uch-Korgon HPP from March 5, 2024. The Uch-Korgon HPP, with its current capacity of 180 MW, has been operating since 1962 without major refurbishment.

Baigaziev emphasized the importance of modernizing the facility, underscoring the significance of the "Rehabilitation of Uch-Korgon HPP" project. The rehabilitation total budget is $100 million, the project is funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The reconstruction of hydro unit 4 is scheduled for completion by November 16, 2024.

Baigaziev warned of a potential energy deficit in the event of reconstruction activities, necessitating temporary restrictions on electricity usage by Kyrgyzstan's consumers. He urged consumers to use electricity conservatively, particularly during peak demand hours from 06:00 to 09:00 in the morning and from 18:00 to 21:00 in the evening.
