BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan, April 18. Kyrgyzstan and the World Bank's International Development Association (IDA) have signed an agreement for the Second Additional Financing for the Sustainable Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Development Project, totaling $7.64 million, Trend reports.

According to the cabinet, this agreement, finalized after discussions between Akylbek Japarov, Chairman of the Kyrgyzstan Cabinet of Ministers, and the leadership of the World Bank Group (WBG) during Japarov's visit to Washington, aims to enhance water supply and sanitation services in rural areas of Kyrgyzstan.

The additional funding supplements the WB's previous commitments of $59.5 million for the Sustainable Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Development Project.

With a focus on rural communities in the Osh, Chuy, and Issyk-Kul regions, the project is expected to benefit around 200,000 people across 94 villages. It includes the construction and rehabilitation of 57 climate-resilient water supply subprojects, upgrades to sanitation facilities in social institutions, and grants for household sanitation improvements.

Additionally, the project aims to strengthen institutional capacity for sustainable service delivery and climate-informed sector reforms, contributing to the overall development goals of Kyrgyzstan.

The additional financing addresses the financial challenges posed by increased construction material prices and allows for larger grants to support sanitation facility upgrades for households in project villages.

Chairman Japarov is leading a delegation currently in Washington to participate in the spring meetings of the boards of governors of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group.
