BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan, August 9. Kyrgyzstan advocates the introduction of a mutually beneficial economic mechanism for water and energy cooperation in Central Asia, President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Zhaparov stated at the 6th Consultative Meeting of Central Asian Heads of State in Astana, Trend reports via the Kyrgyz president's press office.

"Given the limited water resources and their critical importance for the entire region, along with the absence of an effective cooperation mechanism in Central Asia, we advocate for the joint development and implementation of a mutually beneficial economic mechanism for water and energy cooperation. This mechanism will account for the energy, economic, environmental, and social value of water, as well as the respective interests of the countries in the region," Zhaparov emphasized.

He also reminded that, at Kyrgyzstan's initiative, one of the final documents of last year's UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai included a provision for the Expert Dialogue on Mountains and Climate Change, successfully held on June 5, 2024, in Bonn.

Moreover, the president said that Kyrgyzstan is now working to establish this Dialogue as an annual event at COP29 in Baku.

This November, Azerbaijan will host COP29. This decision was made at the COP28 plenary meeting held in Dubai on December 11 last year. Baku will become the center of the world and will receive about 70–80,000 foreign guests.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. COP - the Conference of the Parties - is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change. There are 198 countries that are parties to the Convention. Unless the parties agree otherwise, the COP is held annually. The first COP event took place in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
