( RIA Novosti ) - Police in south east Tajikistan, Central Asia, seized on Monday a total of 22 kilograms ( 48 pounds) of heroin from a Tajik national, the country's drug control agency said.

Police arrested a drug courier, an Afghan national, who had delivered the heroin to Tajikistan.

"Information on his detention was passed to Afghan special services," a spokesman said.

The report released by the Agency for drug control, said over 950 kilograms ( 2,094 pounds) of drugs, including more than 360 kilograms ( 794 pounds) of heroin, have been seized by police in January-October.

Tajikistan is a major transit country for drugs from the world's largest heroin producer, Afghanistan, to former Soviet republics including Russia and some Western countries.
