BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 24. The World Bank (WB) approved a $30 million IDA grant for the development of Tajikistan's water sector, Trend reports with the reference to the WB.

WB's Strengthening Water and Irrigation Management Project, which is co-financed by EU (allocated 16.1 million euro), aims to strengthen capacity for water resources planning and irrigation management in Tajikistan.

“With this project, the World Bank builds on many years of support to Tajikistan’s water sector to ensure that abundant water resources are managed effectively to enhance Tajikistan’s economic growth,” the WB's country manager Ozan Sevimli said.

According to the WB, improvements to two significant irrigation systems in Tajikistan's southern Khatlon region (lower Vakhsh basin and the Upper Vakhsh Basin), will be made.

Since 1996, Tajikistan has received more than $2.4 billion in IDA grants. The World Bank Group is dedicated to extending its assistance to Tajikistan as it strives to improve the lives and meet the aspirations of its population.
