BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 6. Harvesting of early onions has begun in the Khatlon region of Tajikistan, the authorities of the Jayhun district of the region said, Trend reports via Tajik media.

The dehkan farms (large private farms that belong to legal entities) of Istiqlol jamoat (the third-level administrative divisions) were the first to harvest onions in the Jayhun district.

The onions have already begun to be exported to local markets in order to provide the population of Tajikistan with this agricultural crop and reduce prices for it on the domestic market.

The Khatlon region is one of the main producers and exporters of onions. The dehkan farms of the region harvested some 448,755 tons of onions last year.

So far, 10,044 hectares in the region have been sown with onions since the beginning of 2023.

Both the public and dehkan farms of Tajikistan plan to carry out onion sowing on an area of 17,156 hectares this year, of them 11,261 hectares intended for early onions.

Overall, agricultural production in Tajikistan amounted to 49.3 billion somoni ($4.8 billion) in 2022, which is an increase of 8 percent compared to 2021.

Back in January, Minister of Agriculture of Tajikistan Kurbon Hakimzoda said Tajikistan exported more than 191,000 tons of agricultural products worth $54.3 million in 2022.
