DUSHANBE, Tajikistan, September 26. Two bridges have been opened across the Yagnob river in Tajikistan's Ayni district in the Sughd region, Trend reports.
These bridges (10 and 25 meters, respectively), are located 105 kilometers north of Dushanbe and will serve as vital connections for 10 villages in the Yagnob valley. The construction of these bridges was funded by the World Food Programme (WFP).
Previously, the absence of usable road bridges often hindered residents' access to the valley's center and inner village.
"The Yagnob bridges link rural communities with great potential to larger markets for the agricultural products they grow, offering them greater economic opportunities," Charles Inwani, WFP Deputy Country Director in Tajikistan, said.
The construction of the bridges was completed in partnership with Welthungerhilfe (a German private agency) and local authorities. Under the supervision of WFP's engineering teams and in collaboration with a local partner, the project created employment opportunities for local residents.
WFP has been operating in Tajikistan since 1993. The Programme focuses on prioritizing food security and nutrition in national strategies, strengthening government capacity for sustainable hunger solutions, and supporting communities in building resilience to shocks.
