DUSHANBE, Tajikistan, December 4. The World Bank (WB) allocated $57.5 million for the Tajikistan Emergency COVID-19 Project to enhance the country's pandemic response, aid vaccine procurement and distribution, Trend reports.

The project showcased significant achievements across crucial areas. Firstly, the initiative upgraded medical facilities countrywide. The WB contributed to reinforcing Intensive Care Units (ICUs) in 10 hospitals countrywide by supplying medical equipment, materials, protective gear, and renovating facilities. Additionally, investments were made to enhance oxygen provision in 15 Tajik hospitals.

The project also focused on community infection reduction. Financial support enabled COVID-19 awareness campaigns and public engagement, involving the training of journalists and community volunteers.

Another vital aspect involved protecting vulnerable groups. Approximately 234,000 vulnerable households received one-time emergency cash assistance. This aid aimed to alleviate the impact of food price shocks stemming from the pandemic.

Additionally, the initiative aimed to enhance health system digitalization. Through project financing, an electronic COVID-19 registration system was developed.

With the WB’s assistance, Tajikistan acquired nearly 900,000 doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. By June 2023, 98 percent of the adult population had received vaccination, meeting Tajikistan's COVID-19 vaccination goal.

June 4, 2023, marked the 30th anniversary of Tajikistan's partnership with the WB, and its 29-year membership in the International Development Association (IDA). During this time, the WB contributed over $2.8 billion to support infrastructure, education, healthcare, poverty alleviation, and other sectors in Tajikistan.
