UN Secretary-General's special representative for Afghanistan arrives in Ashgabat

UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for Afghanistan, Steffan de Mistura, is on visit to Ashgabat, the press service of the Turkmen government said on Saturday.
"During the meeting held at the Foreign Ministry, Special Representative conveyed UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon's gratitude to President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov of Turkmenistan for efforts to establish peace in Afghanistan," the information said.
The meeting covered urgent issues of global and regional politics and security.
The meeting participants called for further development of cooperation in designing a single concept to promote peace and resolve the situation in Afghanistan, combat international terrorism, transnational organized crime, drug trafficking and other threats and challenges, as well as reduce potential threats and tensions in the region as a whole.
The official information says that "much attention during the meeting was paid to Turkmenistan's initiative to prepare UN-backed program on rebuilding of Afghanistan and socio-economic development of the Afghan people, and the willingness of Turkmenistan, as a neutral peacekeeper state, to provide its political space for the activities of international community to stabilize the situation in Afghanistan".
The office of the United Nations Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA) is located in Ashgabat.
