Turkmenistan has unilaterally closed the border with Kazakhstan in the run-up to the presidential elections on Feb. 12.

Security measures at the border were strengthened in connection with the upcoming presidential elections in Turkmenistan. Foreigners entering the country in a simplified manner will temporarily fail to do this from Feb. 8-15.

The Customs Department reported that Kazakh citizens permanently residing in Mangistau area may arrive, depart and stay without a visa in the Balkan region of Turkmenistan for a period up to five days inclusive. Their place of residence should be noted in their
passport.

Kazakh citizens may enter the Turkmen territory and leave through the checkpoints defined for international travel.
