Turkmen parliament to discuss package of bills

The Majlis (Parliament) of Turkmenistan will consider a number of draft laws and normative-legal acts during the next meeting to be held in Ashgabat on Aug.4, an official Turkmen source said.

In particular, the parliament will consider the draft laws "On Flora", "On sanatoria," "On Refugees," "On Referendum", as well as on making additions to the Criminal Code, Code of Administrative Offences, Code "On Taxes", the law "On elections of members of the Majlis of Turkmenistan".

This issue was discussed at a recent government meeting, during which President Gurbanguly Berdimuhammadov stressed the necessity to maintain a constant relation of Parliament and its structures with voters, public organizations and interested agencies in the preparation and clarification of essence and significance of new bills.

"Stressing that the legislative activity of the Majlis is an effective tool for the successful fulfillment of public policy, large-scale programs and positive changes, the President drew important directions of the parliament's activity to attention of members of the Majlis," the Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper reported on Saturday.

The parliamentary term is five years.

According to the Turkmen constitution, the parliament passes laws, makes changes and additions to the Constitution of Turkmenistan; examines the state budget approval, addresses questions on holding referendums and announces presidential and parliamentary elections.

It also considers issues the appointment and dismissal of the chief of the Supreme Court, attorney general, interior minister and minister of justice and ratifies and terminates international treaties, addresses issues on changes of state borders and the administrative-territorial division of Turkmenistan.
