The OSCE held a seminar in Ashgabat on " Funding models for television in the 21st century", Trend reports referring to the organization.

The event was attended by representatives of the State Committee of Turkmenistan for Television, Radio Broadcasting and Cinematography, the Turkmen Parliament, and the ministries of finance and economy.

Experts from the UK and Ukraine familiarized the audience with the basic principles of public television and the traditional models of financing state, commercial and public television.

“The OSCE participating States are committed to using modern means of communication to ensure freer and wider dissemination of information,” said Natalya Drozd, Head of the OSCE Centre in Ashgabat.

According to the Head of the Center, the transition to new models of financing television is of great importance for the further democratization of society and the development of market relations.

During the seminar, the distinctive features of the media market and the important role of studying the needs and habits of the broadcast, digital and print media were discussed.

The workshop participants looked at financing models such as subscription systems, annual contributions from television viewers, microfinance, digital services tax, and hybrid models. Topics of discussion included the growing influence of non-traditional and non-linear media and the digital future of the media, the source said.
