Turkmenistan and the United Nations (UN) have reviewed the Joint Action Plan of the Interdepartmental Commission on the implementation of Turkmenistan's international commitments in the field of human rights and international humanitarian law and the UN office in Turkmenistan for the second half of 2020, Trend reports with reference to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.

This issue was considered during an online meeting of Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Vepa Hajiyev with Regional Representative of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights for Central Asia Richard Komenda and the UN Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan Elena Panova.

The parties discussed issues of interaction between Turkmenistan and the UN in the field of human rights protection, in the field of education, as well as developing and monitoring National Action Plans in the field of human rights.

The participants considered the activation of Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (UN OHCHR) National Program Officer within the UN Office in Ashgabat, which would serve as technical assistance and coordination in the implementation of projects of the UN on human rights, and facilitate direct communications between the regional office of the OHCHR and Turkmen government.

The situation of human rights in Turkmenistan has been discussed at the UN in 2018. The representative of Ashgabat stated that his country had joined to a number of international treaties. At the same time, the country's accession to the Rome Statute, the treaty establishing the International criminal court, and the optional Protocol to the Convention against torture, which allows human rights defenders to visit without preconditions the prisons of states being parties to the Protocol, is under consideration.
