Turkmenistan reveals volume of potatoes harvest to be collected in Dashoguz region

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Aug. 24

By Klavdiya Romakayeva - Trend:

Landowners of Turkmenistan expect to collect at least 140 centners of potatoes in the Dashoguz region before the onset of cold weather, Trend reports referring to Business Turkmenistan.

According to the information, this year in the Dashoguz region, the bulk of the area is located in the Gurbansoltan Eje district, which is the largest potato producer in the region. A large volume of autumn potatoes will also be grown in the Saparmyrat Nyyazow and Gubadag districts.

It is noted that the basis of the harvest was made up of high-yielding medium-early and early varieties of Dutch selection adapted to local soil and climatic conditions, appreciated by farmers for unpretentious care and resistance to various diseases, the report says.

During the open field harvest in Turkmenistan, which began in early July, the average potato yield was set at 180 centners per hectare. In the Dashoguz velayat region, farmers' associations and some private structures have collected over 26,600 tons of spring-planted potatoes.

It is noted that this is a relatively high figure for the countries of the region. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the average potato yield in Asia and Oceania amounts to about 150 centners per hectare.

According to the state order plan, potatoes were planted on approximately 13,330 hectares of land in Turkmenistan, with most of the plantations located in the Akhal and Murghab regions.

Last year, under the state order of the country, 21,250 tons of cabbage, 38,340 tons of carrots, as well as 214,700 tons of melons were received.
