Turkmenistan doubles greenhouse tomato exports to Russia

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Oct.21

Turkmenistan has doubled the export of greenhouse tomatoes to Russian, Trend reports citing the website of the State Customs of Turkmenistan.

For the first eight months of 2021, Turkmenistan exported 32,000 tons of greenhouse tomatoes to Russia, which is almost twice (92 percent) more compared to the same period last year. Thus, Turkmenistan took 4th position in the ranking of the largest suppliers of greenhouse tomatoes to Russia.

At the same time, Turkmenistan almost overtook Uzbekistan in terms of supplies, which also increased exports over the year, but not so significantly. Uzbek exports increased by 55 percent - up to 37,400 tons. For comparison: during the same period, supplies of greenhouse tomatoes from Turkey to Russia decreased by 2 percent.

Experts of the ‘EastFruit’ (information and analytics platform for the growth of the horticulture business) believe that if earlier Turkmenistan was a relatively small supplier and couldn’t compete with other participants, now Turkmen tomatoes are quite actively competing in foreign markets.

According to East Fruit analysts, amid a continuing decline in imports of greenhouse tomatoes in Russia in 2021, the expansion of Turkmenistan into this market became a real sensation of the year.
